Sigmar Polke

Dualism

October 9, 2021 to January 16, 2022

Sigmar Polke (1941 Oels, Lower Silesia–2010 Cologne) is considered one of the most important contemporary artists in Germany. His artistic career began in the 1960s. The artist, always eager to experiment, developed the raster-dot technique during this period. He created his motifs with individual dots, similar to newspaper print, so that the content of a picture only becomes apparent at a distance.

The exhibition ‘Sigmar Polke. Dualisms’ honoured the artist on the occasion of his 80th birthday. It presented some 100 paintings, drawings and photographs, as well as objects and artist’s books, and provided a comprehensive insight into the artist’s creative work from the 1960s up until his last works of 2009. Full of references to the history of art and literature, but also to everyday political events and social observations, Polke’s pictorial inventions are multifaceted and have lost nothing of their fascination or their humour.
